VIENNA THE KINGDOM OF DETAILS

Austria is one of the smallest countries in Europe. So is Vienna, the capital of the country, slightly smaller than neighbouring metropolises . However, it is a great example, that the big size can be measured in many ways. This city, located on the beautiful, azure Danube river, works like a magnet for centuries, attracts not only tourists and people curious about the world, but also artists, philosophers, scientists, businessmen … Therefore, choosing Vienna for you trip, first of all it is good to plan your time and think about, what we want to see. And to see, taste, watch, there is a lot, if not more …

If you’ve got just little bit of time, you will probably have to choose between becoming a music connoisseur, a gourmet of Viennese cheesecakes and coffee, or a geek-historian … You can also combine it all in one person: a busy tourist who, caring in one hand a camera (or phone), a piece of Sacher cake in the other, having a walk to a concert in the opera, admiring the surrounding buildings at the same time… However, this threatens to confuse your senses completely.. 😀

Therefore, I’m not even going to assure you, that in this story you will find absolutely everything about the Austrian capital. But what I can promise, is frequent updates. Vienna is on my list of frequently visited places, that’s why I will definitely have the opportunity to add new topics 🙂

Gathering materials for the story about Vienna, I tried to combine information collected over the years, along with the information I collected during my last stay there in August 2019. Among these messages, I came across an article about the best living cities in the world. Vienna was elected as such a place for the second time in a row. You can find an interesting article confirming this information here

So what is so special about Vienna?

Well – details. That’s what’s amazing about it.

When you look at the capital of Austria from the artistic side, the details catch the eye of even common people. Details in each of the artistic fields. In Vienna, you can admire buildings, works of art of almost any it’s genre and style. Many composers were also associated with Vienna, which is reflected in the Vienna State Opera. Numerous museums, the beautiful National Library, Palaces, gorgeous gardens, all of this create the picture of this special capital.

Of course, like every metropolis, Vienna has better and worse districts (called Bezirk). What deserves attention, is the diligence, accuracy and order that dominates in most of them. No matter where you go, to the Stephansdom Cathedral, to the coffee shop with Sacher cakes, or to the souvenir shop on Stephansplatz, or to the florist in that area, there is incredible affectiont to the details. Which not only attracts the eye, of course, but arouses admiration. Sincere admiration.

So where should you definitely go?

Schonbrunn Castle, the summer residence of the Habsurgs, is certainly one of the most important attractions, the gardens, the whole neighborhood in general, is almost like an oasis of peace and beauty … Although sometimes quite crowded, especially in Summer. Zoo enthusiasts can go to the Vienna zoo, where you can even see a Panda, not really in it’s natural conditions, but it is alive and very well. 😀

The mentioned Stephansdom Cathedral also deserves a few pics on your phone (or camera). And if you have no fear of heights, I recommend to go, see the tower of the Cathedral. The trip takes place by elevator, costs 6 euros, and provides a wonderful view of the city and surroundings. The name of this church has intrigued me for years, and if someone is going there for the first time, will probably be confused by the fact that, for example, it will be translated into Polish: St. Simon Cathedral. Yes, my dear, Austrians, the names : Stefan and Simon, treat the same or almost the same …

Coffee shops or patisseries adresses, I do not even have to mention, because literally in every corner of the Vienna’s old town you will come across of many of them … But if you want to try the most famous cake in the area, you must go to Sacher coffee shop, in the Hotel with the same name. And please don’t be surprised if you will find long cue there… Because it is not always possible to enter this cafe just like that, and get a table 😀

The Vienna Opera … I visited it for the first time as a teenager, mainly from the perspective of a typical tourist. First of all, because even though I like classical music very much, I have never been an admirer of opera as such. The situation changed dramatically a few years ago, when I decided to show Vienna to my other half … I was then put in an uncompromising situation, when my man (whoever knows him, confirms that he does not look like a person who goes to operas), said, that along with ticket to the Austrian capital, I will need to purchase tickets to the opera for the „Figaro’s Wedding” …

The expression of my face, at that time, unfortunately was not registered on the photo … Apart from the 4.5 to 5h duration of the performance, I had to consider putting some decent shoes in the suitcase, and dresses at least … Who – knows me, knows how usually my travel wardrobe looks like ;D. For those who know me less, let it be enough to say, that I don’t have much to do with any kind of dresses … 😉

But well, Vienna … this name obliges … so I had to survive the „Wedding of Figaro” 😀

Among other attractions, Vienna has its own Madame Tussaud’s museum , the famous „Prater” amusement park, the oldest in Europe, and the wonderful Kahlenberg, where most of the vineyard are located.

You can’t miss the Hofburg Palace or Belvedere Palace, or the original Hundertwasser House.

The only inconvenience, that most tourists complain about, is the fact that not everywhere inside historic buildings, it is allowed to take pictures or use the camera … Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately. It is because Austria really does care about it’s cultural and natural goods.

When it comes to find the accommodation in Vienna, there are plenty of hotels, motels, b & bs and apartments available. Everything can be viewed on Bookig.com. If you are interested, you can browse Booking.com offers here . I personally, because of the circumstances, always stayed and still stay in Baden, and I usually travel to the capital by public transport.

And the public transport is very decent. In some cases expensive, but functional, comfortable and very well marked. From the airport it is very easy to get to the Central Station (formerly Sudbahnhof, now Hauptbahnhof), by train in about 30 minute(RJ, RJX), details are available here. From there we have got many suburban connections. In addition to this station are also two other: Westbahnhof and Wien Mitte.

The U-bahn, Viennese metro, is only a few months older than me, so it is in a good middle age 😛 😀 It has five lines, supports over 100 stations. Detailed map you can find here. Also nationals rail is very good organized, and all useful info they’ve got on their website :  ÖBB

There are also trams and buses to use.

A stay in Vienna will certainly not be cheap, no matter how much you will try to control the budget. Most attractions can be visited on your own, without major problems, using, for example, GetYourGuide. However, this does not change the fact that expenses for travel, entrance tickets, trying coffee or delicious cakes, require wallet monitoring, Unless we have no restrictions in this matter 😉

Can you go to Vienna alone?

In my opinion you can. The Austrians are a specific people, but they are helpful. Perhaps at first glance they have a bit of distance to visitors, but if you will ask a question, they are more likely to help. In the Austrian capital, you can communicate in English without any problems.

When is the best time to go to Austria?

As I am definitely warm weather lover, of course I would recommend Summer. Possibly Spring. But of course whatever you like 😀 In Winter Vienna also has its attractions 😀

…”Lepiej zobaczyć coś raz, niż słyszeć o tym tysiąc razy”…

Przysłowie chińskie.

Austria jest jednym z najmniejszych państw w Europie. Podobnie Wiedeń, stolica kraju, jest nieco mniejszy powierzchniowo, od sąsiednich metropolii. Jest jednak doskonałym przykładem, że wielkość można mierzyć na wiele sposobów. Miasto to, położone nad pięknym, modrym Dunajem, działa jak magnes od wieków, przyciąga nie tylko turystów i ludzi ciekawych świata, ale i artystów, filozofów, naukowców, biznesmenów… Dlatego wybierając się do Wiednia, przede wszystkim dobrze jest rozplanować czas i zastanowić się, co chcemy zobaczyć. A do zobaczenia, skosztowania, obejrzenia , jest bardzo dużo, o ile nie więcej…

Jeśli czasu mamy mało, prawdopodobnie trzeba będzie wybrać pomiędzy wcieleniem się w konesera muzyki, smakosza wiedeńskich serników i kawy, czy historyka-maniaka… Można też połączyć to wszystko w jednej osobie : zabieganego turysty, który z apartem w jednej ręce ( tudzież telefonem), kawałkiem tortu Sachera w drugiej, będzie zmierzał na koncert w operze, podziwiając okoliczne budynki… Grozi to jednak pomieszaniem zmysłów w najlepszym przypadku 😀

Dlatego też, nawet nie zamierzam zapewniać Was, że w tej opowieści znajdziecie absolutnie wszystko na temat austriackiej stolicy. Ale co mogę obiecać, to częste aktualizacje tematu. Wiedeń jest na liście moich często odwiedzanych miejsc, dlatego na pewno będę mieć okazję dołączać nowe wątki 🙂

Kompletując materiały do opowieści o Wiedniu, starałam się połączyć informacje zebrane na przestrzeni lat, razem z tymi, jakie zebrałam podczas mojego ostatniego pobytu tam, w sierpniu 2019. Wśród tych wiadomości, natknęłam się na artykuł o najlepszych do życia, miastach na świecie. Wiedeń został wybrany takim miejscem po raz drugi z rzędu. Co jest zatem takiego szczególnego w Wiedniu?

Otóż właśnie – szczegóły. Oto co jest w nim niezwykłe.

Kiedy spojrzycie na stolicę Austrii od strony artystycznej, detale przyciągają oko nawet laików. Detale w każdej z artystycznych dziedzin. W Wiedniu można podziwiać budynki, dzieła, z niemal każdego gatunku i stylu. Z Wiedniem związanych było też wielu kompozytorów, czego odzwierciedleniem jest Wiedeńska Opera Narodowa. Liczne muzea, przepiękna Biblioteka Narodowa, Pałace, przepiękne ogrody, to wszystko składa się na obraz tej szczególnej stolicy.

Oczywiście jak każda metropolia, Wiedeń ma lepsze i gorsze dzielnice ( zwane Bezirkami). Co jednak zasługuje na uwagę, to staranność, dokładność i porządek, który panuje , w mimo wszystko większości z nich. Obojętnie gdzie bowiem wstąpicie, do Katedry Stephansdom, do cukierenki z tortami Sachera, czy do sklepu z pamiątkami na Stephansplatz, czy do kwiaciarni w tymże rejonie, wszędzie panuje niesamowite wręcz przywiązanie do rzeczonych detali. Co nie tylko przyciąga rzecz jasna oko, ale wzbudza podziw. Szczery podziw.

Gdzie zatem warto się na pewno zatrzymać?

Zamek Schonbrunn, letnia rezydencja Habsurgów, to z pewnością jedna z najważniejszych atrakcji, ogrody, w ogóle cała okolica, jest jak niemal oaza spokoju i piękna….Mimo, że czasem dosyć tłoczna, zwłaszcza latem. Wielbiciele ogrodów zoologicznych mogą się wybrać do wiedeńskiego zoo, gdzie można chociażby zobaczyć Pandę 🙂 W mało co prawda jej właściwych, naturalnych warunkach, ale jest, żyje i ma się dobrze 🙂

Wspomniana Katedra Stephansdom również zasługuje na kilka fotek na Waszym telefonie ( lub aparacie). A jeżeli nie macie lęku wysokości, polecam wybranie się na wieżę Katedry. Wyjazd odbywa się windą, kosztuje 6 euro, i zapewnia cudowny widok na miasto i okolice. Nazwa Katedry intrygowała mnie od lat, a jeśli ktoś wybrał się tu po raz pierwszy, będzie prawdopodobnie zdezorientowany faktem, iż np na język polski będzie ona tłumaczona : Katedra Św Szczepana. Tak, moi drodzy, Austriacy imiona Stefan, i Szczepan traktują tak samo, lub niemal tak samo…

Adresów kafejek, czy cukierenek nawet nie trzeba podawać, bo dosłownie w każdej w uliczce w centrum Wiednia na jakąś się natkniecie… Ale jeżeli ktoś chce spróbować najsłynniejszego wypieku w okolicy, musi wybrać się na tort Sachera, do Hotelu o tej samej nazwie. I proszę się nie zdziwić, jeśli zastanie Was kolejka… Bo do tej kafejki nie zawsze da się wejść ot, tak i zdobyć stolik 😀

Opera Wiedeńska… Pierwszy raz zwiedzałam ją jako nastolatka, głównie z perspektywy typowego turysty. Przede wszystkim dlatego, że o ile bardzo lubię muzykę klasyczną, wielbicielką opery jako takiej, nigdy nie byłam. Sytuacja zmieniła się diametralnie kilka lat temu, kiedy postanowiłam pokazać Wiedeń mojej drugiej połowie… Zostałam wówczas postawiona w sytuacji mało kompromisowej, kiedy to mój mężczyzna ( ktokolwiek go zna, potwierdzi, że nie wygląda na osobę, która bywa w operach), stwierdził, że razem z biletem lotniczym do stolicy Austrii, należy nabyć bilety do opery na “Wesele Figara”….

Wyraz mojej twarzy, w tamtym momencie, niestety nie został zarejestrowany na fotografii… Pomijając już jakieś 4,5 do 5h trwania przedstawienia, musiałam wziąć pod uwagę wrzucenie do walizki jakichś przyzwoitych butów, i sukienki co najmniej… Kto z kolei zna mnie, wie jak wygląda zazwyczaj moja podróżnicza garderoba :D. Tym, którzy znają mnie mniej, niech wystarczy stwierdzenie, że z kieckami wszelkiego kalibru nie mam wiele do czynienia… 😉

Ale cóż, Wiedeń… Pobyt tam zobowiązuje, tak więc przeżyłam “ Wesele Figara” 😀

Z innych atrakcji, Wiedeń ma swoje muzeum figur woskowych, znane wesołe miasteczko “Prater”, najstarsze w Europie, no i cudowny Kahlenberg, gdzie znajduje się większość pól winogron.

Nie można też ominąć Pałacu Hofburg, czy Belwederu, lub oryginalnego Hundertwasser House.

Jedynym mankamentem, na jaki większość turystów narzeka, jest fakt, iż nie wszędzie wewnątrz zabytkowych obiektów, wolno robić zdjęcia, czy używać kamery… Niestety, a może na szczęście. Austria bowiem bardzo dba o dobra kulturalne i naturalne.

Jeśli chodzi o zainstalowanie się w Wiedniu, jest tam do dyspozycji mnóstwo hoteli, moteli, b&b, i apartamentów. Wszystko można przeglądnąć na Bookig.com. Jeśli ktoś zainteresowany, możecie przejrzeć oferty Booking.com tutaj. Ja osobiście z racji okoliczności, podróżując do Austrii zatrzymuję się w Baden, i stamtąd używam lokalnych połączeń komunikacji miejskiej.

A komunikacja jest bardzo przyzwoita. W niektórych przypadkach droga,  ale funkcjonalna, wygodna i bardzo dobrze oznaczona. Z lotniska bardzo łatwo dostać się do Dworca Głównego ( kiedyś Sudbahnhof, obecnie Hauptbahnhof), pociągiem w ok 30 min ( RJ, RJX), szczegóły można zobaczyć tutaj. Stamtąd mamy wiele podmiejskich połączeń. Poza tym dworcem są również dwa inne : Westbahnhof i Wien Mitte. 

U-bahn, wiedeńskie metro, jest ode mnie starsze zaledwie o kilka miesięcy, jest więc zatem w całkiem dobrym średnim wieku 😛 :D. Ma pięć linii, obsługuje ponad 100 stacji. Dokładna mapa jest dostępna tutaj.

Oprócz tego, Wiedeńczycy poruszają się po mieście, i okolicach, tramwajami i autobusami. Opis i rodzaje transportu można znaleźć tu. Narodowe koleje mają również swoją , bardzo dobrze zorganizowaną sieć i stronę internetową : ÖBB.Pobyt w Wiedniu na pewno nie będzie należał do tanich, obojętnie jak bardzo będziemy się starać panować nad budżetem. Większość atrakcji można zwiedzić we własnym zakresie, bez większych problemów, używając na przykład GetYourGuide. Co jednak nie zmienia faktu, że wydatki na przejazdy, bilety wstępu, spróbowanie kawy czy ciasteczka wymagają monitorowania portfela, Chyba, że nie mamy w tej materii żadnych ograniczeń 😉

Czy można do Wiednia wybrać się samemu? Moim zdaniem można. Austriacy są narodem specyficznym, ale jednak pomocnym. Być może na pierwszy rzut oka mają wyjątkowy dystans do przyjezdnych, ale jeśli już zwrócimy się z jakimś zapytaniem, raczej służą pomocą. W stolicy Austrii można porozumieć się bez problemu w języku angielskim.

Kiedy najlepiej wybrać się do Austrii?

Ja, jako osobnik zdecydowanie ciepłolubny, polecam oczywiście lato. Ewentualnie wiosnę. Ale oczywiście co kto lubi ;). Zimą bowiem Wiedeń również ma swoje atrakcje 😀

BADEN, AUSTRIA.

Adult travelling is not as easy, as it seems to be. Even if you don’t actually have a traditional ( at least according to Polish reality) family… Apart from financial issues, you have to blame for everything your responsibilities … And once again responsibilities …

We all have to work… Whether you like it or not… So you have to rely only on your annual leave, which is for people who love to travel, next to nothing… 28 days… And if you live abroad, you would have to visit relatives from time to time. This type of visit is not always a holiday 😀 :p …Sometimes is a real hard work too 😀

Anyway, what I mean is –

when you look at google maps, and do the so-called „bucket list” in English, then you do realize, you will never have enough time to see it all . For this reason, unfortunately, you have to be aware, that most of the times you are heading to some destinations for the first and last time … It is not optimistic, but this is the reality…

That is why, my private list of places I return to, 😜 or at least I am trying to come back 😆 , or at least I plan to return 🙈 , or at least I am trying to plan to return ( 🙈 ) is very short.

Baden occupies a very special place on this list. A charming town located in the area of ​​the so-called Lower Austria, less than 30 km south of beautiful, proud Vienna. A town that I have never look at from the perspective of a traveler or a tourist, just like I don’t look at Krakow or London this way … Baden will always remain my second home 🙂 Probably that is why, this txt will be more sentimental than touristic 😀

Soo… I apologize in advance, for my absolutely uncritical attitude towards this Austrian cute „spa”, where the smell of sulfur sometimes makes you sick 😁, and no, it is not caused by secret connections with the infernal hellfire, even though many people would associate me with it 😁😜

These are Römertherme , destination for many people of all ages, which provides spa tradition with sulfur spring water. The name „baden” in German language means : a bath.

As a small kid, coming from a gray and poor, at that time, Poland, of course I paid attention to completely different attractions, than I do today. I used tolove colorful shops, playgrounds, amusement parks other than at home by the Vistula river… Different toys, different food, different everything … For me as a child – no better or worse, just different…

Always clean and perfectly tidy small streets, lots of flowers in the windows, the smell of the mentioned sulfur, when I was playing in the small garden by the Schwechat, a river flowing through Baden. Grandmother’s stories about Beethoven and his house on one of the streets, about Mozart, about Strauss, about Emperor Francis and Princess Sisi, walking around Rosarium, a wonderful rose’s park, or taking pictures in the nearby Dobelhof Park, these are images, that I still have in front of my eyes, even though many, many years have passed…

Images that live in my memory, not only because I am particularly attached to them, but also because this small town has not changed almost at all in the last 40 years … At least not as much as other places of my childhood.

And that is why I love Baden so much 🥰
Time has stopped here… local residents of this town cherish the appearance of their surroundings, and are proud of it. You will not find here large malls or shopping centers , which presence would cause ruin of the nature, or sentimental places … You will not find here high, modern skyscrapers, which when you look at sometimes the eyes bleeding, especially when they grew in places that they are completely inappropriate…
Baden has not lost its charm over the years.

Those of you, who have never been there, must take my word for it 😀
There are at least a few ways to get to Baden from Vienna. Of course, it all depends on where are you based in the Austrian capital city.

In the past, when I was a child, and we had boarders in Europe, the train journey sometimes could take even about 10 hours, to Vienna itself, then it was necessary to make various combinations to get to Baden. Travelling by car was just as long, because the borders … boarder officers had dared to check documents (horror !!! 😜😁 ), so it took a while …

Today, in times of comfort and prosperity, we can get there from Kraków by car in about 6 to 7hrs. And if you don’t drive, we’ve have planes. I do not recommend buses, because travelling on them is still long, unless small vans , they are a more rational idea. From Krakow flight tickets to Vienna are very cheap. Decent prices from London too. Even in the Summer. Unfortunately, due to the current way of travelling by plane, just going to the airport, checking in, etc., it all consumes more time, than the flight itself. Naturally, depending on where we travel to Vienna from.

However, once we find ourselves in Vienna, there are several options to go to Baden by public transport. Of course, we must locate the station we are at (there are several of them in Vienna, communication in Vienna will be described in my blog about the capital). The name of train station, from which you can catch a train to Baden it’s : Wien Hauptbahnhof. The journey takes no more than 30 minutes and costs about 7 euros.

If you travel from Schwechat – Vienna’s airport, there is a train from there to the Hauptbahnhof itself, for the price of five Euro. From the tram stop next to Vienna Operhouse , you can use also suburban tram – Wiener Lokalbahnen towards Baden, this journey is a bit longer, but much nicer 😀
I would not recommend a taxi, unless you are travelling with the suitcase full of Euros 😜👍🤣

Now we get to the main point: stay and it’s costs.
Let’s agree, Austria is not a cheap country. And Baden, as a spa resort, doubles these prices … Therefore, depending on your budget, I would advise you to consider several options: the B&B option (or something similar) located in Vienna, preferably around the Main Station, this will allow easy movement not only around the capital of Austria, but also trough surroundings.

However, if you have the opportunity to spend money ,to stay in Baden, there are a lot of beautifully situated guesthouses and hotels. Personally, I can recommend Motel Baden, or several apartments that can be booked via Booking.com

What to see in Baden?
The very location of this town is wonderfully delighting, and has absolutely unique charm. One of the favorite spas, already during the Habsburg times, is surrounded by the Vienna forest, the Helenental Valley, and the vineyards of towns. If you are an amateur of long walks or bicycle trips, you have a lot of things to do here… Dobelhof Park, Kurpark, Gutenbrunner Park, atmospheric charming streets in the Biedermeier style, the map of Baden bei Wien will give you miles of beauty, you can walk through hours, and constantly find something new 😀

Rosarium is definitely one of my favorite places.

Rosarium is a garden with over 30,000 rose bushes, nearly 900 species from around the world. And really, no pictures will reflect the beauty of this place. Today, in addition to rose bushes, in Rosarium you can see many other plant beauties, and also, this year’s you can admire an exhibition of photographs from around the world.

But Baden is not only the beauty of nature, the surrounding forests and endless fields of grapes, it is also history.

There are historic churches, the ruins of the Rauhenstein castle with an observation tower, a famous Plague Column on a tiny Baden market square, where in summer the owners serve wine from nearby vineyards, they are old lovely tenements with heurigens, which are definitely worth to seeking out.

What is heurigen? Usually a cozy eatery where you can eat Wiener schnitzel, a huge pork chop, or delicious Marillenknödel, an apricot dumplings, with local wine made of freshly picked fruit, local liqueur or just a delicious beer 😜 More info about taste of Austria, will soon be ready in our kitchen section 😀

Austrian cuisine is quite similar to Polish. A lot of noodles, cheesecakes, potatoes and sausages. Of course, it is always seasoned with regional methods of preparation, which gives dishes a specific touch. Even though the German language does not sound very friendly 😀

When it comes to communicating with locals , in Vienna you can talk in some places in English, in smaller towns, knowledge of German will be very useful.

Also the weather in Austria is very similar to Polish weather. Formerly – harsh Winters, snow up to the knees, wonderful Springs, warm Summers turning into colorful Autumn. Today all of this it looks a bit different. Unbelievable heat, small amounts of snow in Winter – just like in all of Europe, everyone can tell, that something is changing in this matter …

Any shopping?

Basic groceries can be purchased at local, small supermarkets blended in neatly with the town’s background. There is : Billa, Spar, Lidl, Green Market. Numerous small shops also allow you to buy food or souvenirs. Baden also has plenty of cafes, patisseries and restaurants, and even a casino.

Is it safe there?

As a person travelling not only with somebody else, but also solo, I can definitely confirm that this Austrian resort is cozy and very friendly. It’s easy to move around the town, and really hard to get lost. Well, unless you are walking to the neighboring town on foot, follow Google maps faithfully, while talking through a messenger with your family in Poland … Then sometimes you can unexpectedly find yourself on the motorway, where the faces of drivers looking at you, are just priceless … 🙈

In Baden, almost everywhere history intertwines with nature, and modernity does not affect this ideal state. Has not affected for years … This small town, in the neighborhood of one of the largest European capitals, is a great example that civilization does not have to trample and bury the worthy places under the rubble of years … An example of the fact, that despite the lack of shopping malls , fast food, miles of supermarkets, you can create an attractive place for tourists. Attractive for everyone, those seeking active rest and those who want to rest in peace, in natural peace and tranquility… It is finally an example of the fact, that maybe there is still hope that man will respect such oases. Therefore, if you are in Vienna, or in the surroundings I recommend with all my heart, if not staying, at least visiting this beautiful town in the Helenental Valley.

Podróżowanie w dorosłym życiu, to wcale nie taka prosta sprawa. Nawet jeśli nie ma się prawdziwej, jak polska tradycja nakazuje, rodziny 😉 … Pomijając kwestie finansowe, to wszystkiemu winne obowiązki… I jeszcze raz obowiązki…

Bo pracować przecież trzeba. Urlopu w tej pracy, co kot napłakał… Marne 28 dni…A do tego, jeżeli mieszka się za granicą, trzeba by i krewnych odwiedzić od czasu do czasu. Choć to już raczej mało ma wspólnego z urlopem 😉 To chwilami jest jak ciężka praca :D…

Ale do czego zmierzam?

Otóż chodzi o to, że jak się tak zerknie na google maps, i zrobi tzw, z angielska “bucket list”, to życia by człowiekowi nie starczyło, żeby to wszystko zobaczyć…Z tegoż owóż powodu, niestety trzeba mieć świadomość, że do niektórych destynacji  zmierzamy pierwszy, ale zarazem i ostatni raz… Mało to optymistyczne, ale takie są realia…

Dlatego właśnie moja prywatna lista miejsc do których wracam, albo przynajmniej staram się wracać 😜 albo przynajmniej mam w planie powracać 😆 albo przynajmniej mam w planie się starać powracać 🙈 jest bardzo krótka.

Szczególne miejsce na tej liście zajmuje właśnie Baden. Urokliwe miasteczko  znajdujące się w rejonie tzw Niederosterreich, czyli Dolnej Austrii, niecałe 30 km na południe od pięknego, dumnego Wiednia. Miasteczko, którego nigdy nie postrzegałam z perspektywy podróżnika czy turysty, podobnie, jak nie patrzę w ten sposób na Kraków, czy obecnie Londyn…Baden na zawsze pozostanie po prostu moim drugim domem 🙂 Stąd i opis miasteczka bardziej sentymentalny, niż turystyczny 😀

W każdym razie, jakby co, to z góry przepraszam, za moje absolutnie bezkrytyczne nastawienie do tego austriackiego uzdrowiska, gdzie zapach siarki czasem przyprawia o mdłości 😀

I nie, nie jest to spowodowane potajemnymi związkami z piekielnymi czeluściami, mimo, że moją osobę wielu by z tym skojarzyło 😁😜To okoliczne źródła siarkowe, cel podróży wielu ludzi w różnym wieku. Słowo „baden” wszak po niemiecku znaczy ” kąpać”…

Jako mały brzdąc, przyjeżdżający z szarej i jednak biednej, w tamtym okresie, Polski okresu PRL-u, rzecz jasna zwracałam uwagę na zupełnie inne atrakcje, niż dzisiaj. Uwielbiałam kolorowe sklepy, place zabaw, inne niż w domu nad Wisłą wesołe miasteczka….Inne zabawki, inne jedzenie, inne wszystko… Dla mnie jako dziecka – nie – lepsze, czy gorsze, po prostu inne.

Zawsze czyste i perfekcyjnie zadbane małe uliczki, mnóstwo kwiatów w oknach, zapach wspomnianej siarki, kiedy bawiłam się w małym ogródku nad Schwechatem, rzeką przepływającą przez Baden. Opowieści babci o Beethovenie i jego domu na jednej z uliczek, o Mozarcie, o Straussie, o cesarzu Franciszku i księżniczce Sisi, spacery po Rosarium, cudownym różanym parku, czy robienie zdjęć w sąsiednim Dobelhof Park, to obrazy, które ciągle mam przed oczami, mimo upływu wielu, wielu lat….

Obrazy, które żyją w mojej pamięci, nie tylko dlatego, że jestem do nich szczególnie przywiązana, ale również ze względu na to, że to małe miasteczko nie zmieniło się prawie wcale przez ostatnich 40 lat….A przynajmniej nie aż tak, jak inne miejsca mojego dzieciństwa.

I właśnie dlatego kocham Baden tak bardzo.🥰

Tutaj czas się zatrzymał, mieszkańcy tego miasteczka pielęgnują wygląd ich otoczenia, i są z niego dumni. Nie znajdziesz tu wielkich centrów, czy galerii handlowych, których budowa byłaby przyczyną zrujnowania natury, albo miejsc sentymentalnych…Nie znajdziesz tu wysokich, nowoczesnych wieżowców od których aż oczy krwawią, zwłaszcza kiedy urosły w miejscach zupełnie nieodpowiednich.

Baden nie straciło ani krzty swojego uroku przez te lata.

Ci z Was, którzy nigdy tam nie byli, muszą uwierzyć mi na słowo 😀

Sposobów i możliwości dotarcia do Baden z Wiednia, jest co najmniej kilka. Oczywiście wszystko zależy od miejsca początkowego podróży. 

Dawniej, za czasów mojego dzieciństwa, kiedy ( o zgrozo!!! ) istniały granice, podróż pociągiem czasem trwała nawet ok 10h, do samego Wiednia, potem jeszcze trzeba było przedsięwziąć różne kombinacje, aby dostać się do Baden. Podróże samochodem bywały równie długie, bo przecież służby graniczne miały czelność sprawdzać dokumenty… także trochę to trwało…

Dziś, w czasach wygody i dobrobytu możemy w jakieś 6h do 7h dojechać samochodem z Krakowa do Baden. A jak ktoś niejeżdżący, to mamy i samoloty. Autobusów nie polecam, bo podróż nimi nadal długawa, chyba, że małe vany przewozowe, to już bardziej racjonalny pomysł.

Z Krakowa bilety lotnicze do Wiednia, powiedziałabym, tanie jak barszcz. Z Londynu również ceny przyzwoite. Nawet latem. Niestety, ze względu na to, jak wyglądają obecnie podróże samolotami, sama wyprawa na lotnisko, odprawy, itd , to wszystko konsumuje więcej czasu niż sam lot. Naturalnie w zależności od tego skąd do Wiednia podróżujemy.

Natomiast jak już znajdziemy się w Wiedniu, to opcji dotarcia do Baden jest kilka. Musimy oczywiście zlokalizować dworzec na którym jesteśmy ( jest ich Wiedniu kilka, komunikacja w Wiedniu ukaże się w moim blogu o stolicy). Dworcem z którego można złapać pociąg do Baden, jest Wien Hauptbahnhof. Podróż trwa nie więcej niż 30 min i kosztuje ok 7 euro. 

Jeśli podróżujemy z lotniska Schwechat w Wiedniu, mamy z niego pociąg do samego Hauptbahnhof właśnie.  Spod Opery Wiedeńskiej mamy również do dyspozycji tramwaj – Wiener Lokalbahnen , podróż nim jest dłuższa, niż pociągiem, ale o wiele przyjemniejsza 🙂

Taxi serdecznie nie polecam,  chyba, że ktoś podróżuje z walizką eurasów…

I tak oto właśnie dochodzimy do punktu głównego : pobyt i jego koszty. 

Austria, umówmy się, nie należy do tanich krajów sama w sobie. A Baden, jako uzdrowisko jeszcze te ceny czasem podwaja… Dlatego w zależności od naszego budżetu radziłabym rozważenie kilku opcji : opcja B&B ( lub coś podobnego) zlokalizowana w Wiedniu, najlepiej w okolicach wspomnianego Dworca Głównego, to pozwoli na łatwe poruszanie się nie tylko po stolicy Austrii, ale i okolicach.

Jeżeli natomiast mamy możliwość wydania pieniążków na pobyt w samym Baden, jest tam sporo pięknie położonych pensjonatów i hoteli. Osobiście mogę polecić Motel Baden,  lub kilka apartamentów, które można zabukować przez Booking.com.

Co zobaczyć w Baden?

Już samo położenie tego miasteczka jest cudownie malownicze i ma absolutnie niepowtarzalny urok. To jedno z najbardziej znanych uzdrowisk, już za czasów dworu Habsburskiego, jest otoczone lasem Wiedeńskim, Doliną Helenental i winnicami sąsiednich miejscowości. Jeśli jesteście amatorami długich spacerów, bądź wycieczek rowerowych, macie tutaj spore pole do popisu. Dobelhof Park, Kurpark, Gutenbrunner Park, nastrojowe urokliwe uliczki w stylu biedermeierowskim, można by wyliczać kilometrami mapkę Baden bei Wien, po którym można dreptać godzinami, i ciągle znajdować coś nowego 😀

Do moich ulubionych miejsc należy zdecydowanie Rosarium.

Rosarium to ogród z ponad 30tys krzewów różanych, blisko 900 gatunków z całego świata. I tak naprawdę żadne zdjęcia nie oddadzą piękna tego miejsca.  Dziś, oprócz krzewów różanych, w Rosarium można oglądać wiele innych roślinnych piękności, a dodatkowo, w tym roku artyzmu temu parkowi dodaje wystawa fotografii z całego świata.

Ale Baden to nie tylko piękno natury, otaczające lasy i niekończące się pola winogron, to również historia.

To zabytkowe kościoły, ruiny zamku Rauhenstein z wieżą widokową, to pomnik Trójcy Świętej na malutkim badeńskim ryneczku, gdzie latem właściciele serwują wino z pobliskich winnic, to stare prześliczne kamieniczki, w których czasem warto poszukać heurigenów.

A co to heurigen? Zazwyczaj przytulna knajpka, gdzie można zjeść Wiener schnitzel, ogromny kotlet schabowy, albo przepyszne Marillenknödel, czyli morelowe knedle, popijając lokalnym winem ze świeżo zebranych owoców, lokalnymi nalewkami lub po prostu pysznym piwkiem 😛

Kuchnia austriacka jest dosyć zbliżona do polskiej. Dużo w niej klusek, serników, ziemniaków i kiełbasek. Oczywiście zawsze jest okraszona regionalnymi sposobami przyrządzania, co nadaje daniom specyficzny wydźwięk. Więcej o smakach Austrii już niedługo w naszym kuchennym dziale 😀

Jeśli chodzi o porozumiewanie się z tzw tubylcami – w Wiedniu można porozmawiać w niektórych miejscach po angielsku, w mniejszych miasteczkach, raczej znajomość niemieckiego bardzo się przyda. 

Także pogoda w Austrii jest bardzo podobna do polskiej. Dawniej – srogie zimy, śniegu po kolana, cudowne wiosny , ciepłe lata przechodzące w kolorową jesień. Dziś wygląda to nieco inaczej. Rekordowe upały, znikome ilości śniegu zimą – podobnie jak w całej Europie, każdy jest w stanie stwierdzić, że coś się niepokojąco zmienia w tej materii….

A jakieś zakupy?

Artykuły pierwszej potrzeby można nabyć w lokalnych, małych supermarketach wtopionych elegancko w tło miasteczka. Do dyspozycji mamy : Billa, Spar, Lidl, Zielony Market. Liczne małe sklepiki również pozwalają na nabycie żywności czy pamiątek. Baden posiada także mnóstwo kafejek, cukierenek i restauracji, a nawet Kasyno.

Czy w Baden jest bezpiecznie?

Jako osoba podróżująca nie tylko w towarzystwie, ale również solo, mogę zdecydowanie potwierdzić, że ten austriacki kurort jest przutulny i bardzo przyjazny. Łatwo się po nim poruszać, naprawdę bardzo trudno się zgubić. No,chyba, że idzie się do sąsiedniego miasteczka pieszo, podążając wiernie za google map, jednocześnie rozmawiając przez messengera z rodziną w Polsce… Wtedy czasem można się niespodziewanie znaleźć na drodze szybkiego ruchu, gdzie miny kierowców na Wasz widok, mówią wszystko… 🙈

W Baden niemal wszędzie historia przeplata się z naturą, a współczesność nie narusza tego idealnego wręcz stanu. Nie narusza od lat…To niewielkie miasteczko, w sąsiedztwie jednej z największych stolic Europy, jest doskonałym przykładem na to, że cywilizacja nie musi deptać i zakopywać pod gruzami lat, tego co warto pielęgnować i szanować… Przykładem na to, że mimo braku galerii handlowych, fast foodów, niezliczonej ilości supermarketów, można stworzyć dla turystów atrakcyjne miejsce. Atrakcyjne zarówno dla szukających aktywnego wypoczynku, jak i pragnących odpocząć w spokoju, w naturalnym spokoju… Jest wreszcie przykładem tego, że może jest jeszcze nadzieja, że człowiek będzie szanował takie oazy. Dlatego, jeśli będziecie w Wiedniu lub okolicach, z całego serca polecam, jeśli nie pobyt, to choć odwiedzenie tego malowniczego miasteczka w Dolinie Helenental. 

Miasteczko jest małe i przytulne, można piechotą, zażywając świeżego powietrza, zwiedzić całą oklicę. Jeśli jednak chcielibyście dowiedzieć się więcej na temat tej miejscowości i okolicznego transportu, wszelkie potrzebne informacje możecie znaleźć tutaj.

Po pierwsze i najważniejsze : pomyślcie o wszystkim, co wiecie na temat meksykańskiej kuchni znanej w Europie i… zapomnijcie o tym szybko 😀 

Pomijając jakość składników, bogactwo przypraw i sposób podania, to liczy się proszę Państwa kunszt…Kunszt. Tego smaku i finezji wykonania nie znalazłam do tej pory w żadnej z meksykańskich, czy karaibskich restauracji w Europie. Tortille, quesadille, burritosy, fajity, czy inne nachosy smakują w kraju ich pochodzenia zupełnie inaczej. Powiecie : tak jest przecież z każdą kuchnią… A ja powiem, że to nieprawda, włoska kuchnia, której jestem dozgonną fanką , wszędzie jest doskonała, nawet w przeciętnej włoskiej restauracji… Z meksykańską kuchnią jest inaczej, proszę mi wierzyć. 

Składniki, których w domu raczej nie stosuję, na przykład kolendra, czy chili, nagle są pyszne… Być może jest to kwestia właściwej kombinacji smaków…Nawet proste placki kukurydziane mają absolutnie, zupełnie inny posmak. Nachosy… proste , po naszemu : chipsy, tam nie są nawet smażone na głębokim oleju…Są raczej przygotowywane jak dawniej nasze podpłomyki ( dla tych starej daty : wytłumaczcie młodym, co to podpłomyk 😉 ). 

Kuchnia Meksyku jest tak aromatyczna i kolorowa jak cały kraj. Oprócz tradycyjnych mielonych mięsiw z serii chili con carne, steków, czy owoców morza, w meksykańskich garach często gości agawa ( z której nota bene można zrobić wszystko, od kremów, po nitki do szycia! ), a jako dodatki czy przekąski serwuje się na przykład świerszcze, czy…pająki ( na szczęście tych ostatnich nie miałam wątpliwego szczęścia próbować :D). A jednocześnie panuje tam prostota i pasja. Dziełem sztuki staje się nawet zwykła zupa grzybowa, po dodaniu na przykład…orzechów..

Czy dania zawsze są bardzo ostre? Odpowiedź brzmi : nie. Przede wszystkim, dla własnego komfortu należy zawsze się upewnić, czy to, co zamawiamy będzie bardzo pikantne. Poza tym najczęściej, to nie samo danie jest “hot”, ale sosy, czyli tzw salsy, podawane do prawie wszystkiego. 

Gdzie jadać? Ja, jeżeli chodzi o wybór restauracji, czy pubu, polegam na wyborze mojej drugiej połowy, to Jego działka. Osobiście nie mam tzw. : ręki, do wybierania knajpek. Różnorodność jadłodajni w Meksyku wcale takiego wyboru nie ułatwia. Od ciągnących się kilometrami przez Mexico City małych stoisk z czym dusza zapragnie, poprzez rodzinne gastronomie, aż po ekskluzywne restauracje, wszystko tam znajdziecie. A jakość niekoniecznie idzie w parze z ceną…Czasem bardzo proste, małe, niepozorne sklepiki, mają najlepszą na świecie quesadillę za 15 pesos…Także to już kwestia gustu. 

Jako, że jestem osobą spożywającą ostatnimi czasy mięso bardzo sporadycznie, i jeśli już, to staram się upewnić, że jest z zaufanej hodowli, na wyjazdach również przede wszystkim spożywam raczej dania bezmięsne. A w Meksyku, proszę mi wierzyć, jest ich cała masa, i są tak fantastycznie przyprawione i podane, że o mięsie można nawet na ziemi Majów zapomnieć 😀 Oczywiście od czasu do czasu zdarza mi się w podróży zjeść, a raczej spróbować tylko, lokalnych wędlin, mięs czy przetworów mięsnych. Degustacją steków, czy innych udek zdecydowanie zajmuje się zaś moja druga połowa 😉 

Jak z napiwkami? Różnie…Tyle Wam powiem. W większości miejsc, gdzie mieliśmy okazję zjeść, napiwek nie był doliczany, a wtedy, według tutejszej reguły “należy się” 10%. Ale również – to już od Was samych zależy, co i jak. Choć przyznam, że spotkaliśmy się z dosyć niezręczną sytuacją, kiedy źle zrozumieliśmy rachunek, a kelner w niegrzeczny sposób zwrócił nam uwagę na to, że napiwek nie był doliczony… Dając jednocześnie do zrozumienia, że jak najbardziej się należał…

W każdym razie jedno jest pewne : kilka kilogramów na plusie po powrocie z Meksyku, trzeba brać pod uwagę 😀 Nawet jeśli spędzacie czas bardzo aktywnie 😉 I to nawet nie ze względu na jakość…ale na ilość, bo czasu mało, a skosztować tyle się chce …. 😀

A co tam w kieliszkach brzęczy? Alkohole meksykańskie są równie różnorodne, jak i kuchnia. Liczne likiery, rumy, piwa zostają jednak w cieniu tequili. Głównym zaś trunkiem, jaki na świecie pozostaje w cieniu tequili jest Mezcal. Czy to jednak nie jedno i to samo? Otóż nie. Tequila jest produkowana z jednego typu agawy, niebieskiej jej odmiany, Mezcal natomiast z różnych jej gatunków. Światowa sława tequili sprawiła niestety, że jej jakość czasami pozostawia wiele do życzenia, nie mówiąc już o sposobie jej picia. Z Mezcalem historia jest nieco inna, i dzięki temu, jest on w Meksyku uważany za nieco szlachetniejszy trunek aniżeli sama tequila. Przygotowanie obydwu jest również zupełnie inne, dlatego też i smak nie jest ten sam. Cenowo, Mezcal jest droższy, a tequila z kolei, zwłaszcza ta tańsza, z racji tego, że rozpowszechniona na całym świecie, jakością jednak od Mezcala odbiega. Oczywiście, że są gusta i guściki. Tym bardziej, że zdarzyło mi się spróbować Jose Cuervo w Londynie i w Mexico City… Ten sam alkohol, a różnica nie do opisania…

W każdym razie, jeśli tylko macie okazję degustacji meksykańskich alkoholi, czy dań, gorąco polecam. Nie tylko dowiecie się jak smakują dania, których w domu nigdy tak samo nie ugotujecie 😉 😀 ale i będziecie mieli okazję sprawdzić, czy tylko polska wódka ma moc 😀 :p

The most important thing is : think about everything you know about Mexican cuisine known in Europe and … forget it quickly 😀

Apart from the quality of ingredients, richness of spices and the way of serving, what counts is the craft … The artistry. I have not found this taste and finesse in any of the Mexican or Caribbean restaurants in Europe. Tortillas, quesadillas, burritos, fajitas and other nachos, taste completely different in their country of origin. You would probably say: this is how it is with every kitchen … And I will say that this is not true, Italian cuisine, which I am an undying fan, is excellent everywhere, even i the average Italian restaurants … With Mexican cuisine is different, believe me.

Ingredients that I don’t use at home, such as coriander or chilli, are suddenly delicious … Maybe it’s a matter of the right combination of flavors … Even simple corn pies have an absolutely different flavor. Not deep fried, just baked….

Mexican cuisine is as aromatic and colourful as the whole country. In addition to traditional minced meats, from the chilli con carne series, steaks or seafood, agave is often found in Mexican pots (from which everything can be done, from creams to sewing threads!). And as extras or snacks are served, for example crickets or … spiders (luckily the latter didn’t have the doubtful luck to try: D). At the same time, there is simplicity and passion. Even ordinary mushroom soup becomes a work of art, after adding, for example … nuts …

Are the dishes always very spicy? The answer is : no. First of all, for your own comfort, always make sure that what you order will be very spicy, so just ask. In addition, most often, the dish is not „hot” itself, but sauces, or so-called salsas are, served with almost anything.

Where to eat?… When it comes to choosing a restaurant or pub, I depend on my other half choices, it’s his part of the travel organisation 😀 Personally, I am not really good at this. The variety of diners in Mexico does not make such a choice easier. From small food stalls, placed for miles through Mexico City, whatever your heart desires, through family gastronomy, to exclusive restaurants, you’ll find everything there. And the quality does not necessarily match the price … Sometimes very simple, tiny, humble shops, have the best quesadilla in the world, for 15 pesos … It is also a matter of taste.

As I am a person eating meat only sporadically recently, and if so, I try to make sure, that it is from a trusted source, on trips I also eat meatless dishes most of the time. And in Mexico, believe me, there is a whole bunch of them, and they are so fantastically seasoned and served, that you can even forget about meat on this Mayan land 😀. Of course, from time to time I occasionally do eat, or rather try only, local sausages , meats or other meat specialities. Tasting steaks or other, nuggets, is definitely done by my other half 😉

How about tips? It is very different everywhere … That’s all I can say. In most places where we had the opportunity to eat, the tip was not added, and then, according to the local rule, „you should” give them 10%. But also – it is up to you. Although I admit that we encountered an awkward situation once, when we misunderstood the bill, and the waiter rudely pointed out to us, that the tip was not added, and made us felt really weird…Implying at the same time, that it was well deserved…

Anyway, one thing is certain : a few kilos in the plus, after returning from Mexico, you have to take into account 😀 Even if you spend time very actively 😉 And not even because of the quality … but the quantity, because time is short, and you want to taste so much …. 😀

And what is ringing in the glasses? Mexican alcohols are as diverse as they are cuisine. Numerous liqueurs, rums, and beers remain in the shade of tequila. But the main drink that remains behind tequila’s back, is Mezcal. Is this not one and the same though? Well no. Tequila is made from one type of agave, its blue variety, while Mezcal from various species. The worldwide fame of tequila has unfortunately caused, that its quality sometimes leaves much to be desired, not to mention the way it’s being drink. With Mezcal, the story is a bit different, and thanks to this, in Mexico it is considered a slightly more noble drink, than tequila itself. The preparation of both is also completely different, therefore the taste is not the same. Price-wise, Mezcal is more expensive, and tequila, in particular, the cheaper one, due to the fact, that it is widespread throughout the world, but the quality differs from Mezcal. Of course everyone has different taste…. If you try Jose Cuervo in London and Mexico City, for example… The same alcohol, and the indescribable difference …

So, if you only have the opportunity to taste Mexican alcohols or dishes, I highly recommend it. Not only will you find out how the dishes taste that you will never cook at home the same way 😀 😀 but you will also have the opportunity to check if only Polish vodka has the power 😀 :p
