TENERIFE – THE ISLAND OF THE BLACK BEACHES

While writing texts about my trips, even thought it is just recently, but I have already managed to work out a certain routine. The main part is to find the right quote, which in my opinion, of course, tells something about a given place. The quote I chose for my Tenerife story is just as controversial as the whole blog will probably be. Well .. how does this sound : travelling is not a matter of money? After all, we must be able to afford a trip, pay for journeys, accommodation, buy souvenirs, etc., etc. … The list of expenses can be endlessly extended … Nevertheless, although Paulo Coelho is not one of my favourite writers, I fully agree with this statement.

Why?

Because, my all dears, depends only on ourselves, on no one else … Travelling does not necessarily mean flying throughout the year to five different continents, travelling in a rented car to all European capitals in a month, and certainly does not mean booking five-star hotels in a peak season. All this is nothing more, than a matter of our preferences … And if we are already dreaming of great travelling, then we should first think whether we are not confusing travelling with the desire for luxurious rest … Because, this is not same … For a fully luxurious holiday at least once a year, really only very few of us can afford … Even if we assume that luxury is a relative concept …

That is why, for someone who likes to travel, financial issues are not the limitation …. If you can’t afford a flight to Bora Bora, you will be satisfied with a trip, even if cycling, around your area, or buy a bus ticket to the neighbouring city, because always, always and everywhere you can find something interesting, at any latitude 🙂 You just need to look for these places. And above all, you need to have a desire to find them 😀

However, this does not change the fact, that each one of us has some favourite dots on the map of the world: some of them are on the bucket list, some are only „optional”…

And here I’ll start another controversial topic : well, Tenerife was always for me only – optional. I have never been a big fan of endless parties, especially in the hotels, travelling for entertainment purposes only, or partying for a week at the all inclusive bar. And this is, what I associated Tenerife with. To this day, I have the impression, that if the circumstances in Malta occurred, I would probably not have Tenerife on my list of destinations already ticked out …

So, as I mentioned in the blog about Malta, one rainy day, I was so lucky to get a coupon there, which turned out to be a week’s stay in a hotel complex in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands. And what did I think ???

And I just thought : yeah, right! 😀

And so I thought until checking in at the reception of Beverly Hills Heights Tenerife …. From the very beginning I was very sceptical about this trip. I have never won anything in my life! 🙈 Probably because of that, I have neglected to prepare it properly. Apart from my doubts about the reality of the fact, that I will not have to pay for a week’s stay for two people in a one-room apartment in the hotel complex, I was worried that my money spent on the flight (the flight must have been on us) will be a bit wasted if it will turn out on the spot, that there is no reservation for us …. And the flight in the company of the already laud party atmosphere only confirmed me in my believes, that something with this trip will be wrong 🙈 😀

So was there something wrong? The hotel and the apartment itself turned out to be very comfortable, friendly, located in a very good place for travellers like us, because for a distance of about fifteen minutes, we had at our disposal a big bus station, with buses going to different directions of the island. Bus tickets, back then (December 2017), had very affordable prices, taking into account the distances between some localities. Current prices and travels can be easily traced at: titsa.com.

So accommodation in Beverly Hills Heights, despite the fact, that we rarely choose the hotel option, we loved it, and it is really recommendable. I advise you however, to consider that it is located on a large hill … 🙈

And as for the island itself … Tenerife is beautiful. This is an undeniable fact. National Park with the Teide volcano, the highest hill in the Atlantic (which, moreover, we were unable to climb, because only 200 people can enter per day, so you have to buy tickets well in advance), is one of the island’s biggest attractions. Beautiful beaches with an unusual view of black sand, the picturesque cliffs of Los Gigantos – in Tenerife there is no doubt, you can find places, which will please your eyes. For those, looking for fascinating views, I can recommend around Chinguaro, where the view of houses built near the caves is really amazing. Brave in spirit and body ones, they can go to the beautifully situated Playa Diego Hernandez, the nearby nudist beach. Contrary to appearances, not only to work on the tan of the whole body, literally. Groups of modern so-called flower children live there, in tents, with small hearths nearby, and even with small children. This is such an amazing view, that you’ve got the impression, that it is on another planet, where everyone lives in harmony with nature …

The capital of Tenerife, Santa Cruz or Puerto de la Cruz, located in the north of the island also encourage with beautiful views, as well as other attractions, which primarily includes Loro Park. ZOO arousing as much interest as controversy … As per myself, I can only say that, yes, there are a lot of shows with dolphins, killer whales, various types of birds or reptiles. I leave the matter of ethics for your review. However, I must admit, that the animals staying there are really well cared for. What can not be said about every zoo …. And such a beautiful aquarium part, so far, I have never seen anywhere.

But Tenerife has its other side. Unfortunately. This site is mainly to be observed in the south of the island. The area around Playa de las Americas is an area literally occupied by party people. Especially in the summer season. Crowds of visitors in restaurants, nightclubs, on beaches, in shopping malls. Los Cristianos does not differ much from this pattern. In this part of Tenerife one of the main attractions is Siam Park. A water paradise for children and adults.

How to explore the island? As I mentioned, you can use city buses. You can also do a lot of hiking, but remember that Tenerife is a very mountainous area. Of course, many travellers recommend renting a car, because it is undoubtedly a type of transport allowing you to explore the island faster, especially if time is limited. However, if you are not sure what, when and where to see in Tenerife, you can browse the Tenerife 100% life website.

In my opinion, the pro side of Tenerife is the weather 🥰. We travelled the island in December, among the ubiquitous Christmas decorations, and at the same time among the palm trees. At about 28st C. What more could you possibly want ??? 😀 The natives will complain to you a little about Calima, the wind from the Sahara … But what you do not do for the sun’s rays 😀 ….. Therefore, everyone who will be on this Canary island once, will always envy its inhabitants the climate, even if they have to feel literally like on the frying pan in the summer ….

Unfortunately for Tenerife, a year later I landed in Lanzarote. Much smaller, calmer, I would say – a more gentle Canarian island. Since then, Tenerife has inevitably returned to my list of so-called „only options” …

Does this mean that I would advise you not to visit Los Cristianos or Santa Cruz or anywhere in Tenerife? Absolutely not !!! Quite the opposite ! 😀 If you have the chance and the opportunity – fly. See for yourself, because maybe for you, this island will become the favourite holiday destination 😀

Pisząc teksty o moich podróżach, od niedawna co prawda, ale już zdążyłam wypracować pewną rutynę. Do jej podstawowych elementów należy znalezienie odpowiedniego cytatu, obrazującego, według mnie oczywiście, dane miejsce. Cytat, jaki wybrałam do mojej opowieści o Teneryfie jest równie kontrowersyjny, jak będzie zapewne cały ten blog. Bo niby jak to : podróżowanie nie jest kwestią pieniędzy? Przecież musi być nas stać na wyjazd, na opłacenie przejazdów, pobytu, kupienie pamiątek, itp, itd… Listę wydatków można tak bez końca przedłużać…. Niemniej jednak, mimo iż Paulo Coelho nie należy do moich ulubionych pisarzy, ja się z tym stwierdzeniem zgadzam w stu procentach.

Dlaczego?

Bo wszystko moi drodzy zależy tylko i wyłącznie od nas samych, od nikogo innego… Podróżowanie wcale nie musi oznaczać latania w ciągu roku na pięć różnych kontynentów, przemierzania w wynajętym aucie wszystkich stolic Europy w ciągu miesiąca, a już na pewno nie oznacza bukowania pięciogwiazdkowcych hoteli w sezonowych szczytach. To wszystko jest niczym więcej, jak tylko kwestią naszych preferencji… A jeśli już marzymy o wielkim podróżowaniu, to najpierw należałoby się zastanowić, czy nie mylimy podróżowania właśnie, z chęcią luksusowego wypoczynku… Bo to, moi drodzy, nie jest to samo… Na w pełni luksusowy wypoczynek przynajmniej raz do roku naprawdę niewielu z nas stać… Nawet, jeśli przyjmiemy, że luksus jest pojęciem względnym…

Dlatego właśnie, dla kogoś, kto lubi podróżować, kwestie finansowe nie są ograniczeniem…. Jeśli nie można sobie pozwolić na lot na Bora Bora, zadowoli się wycieczką, choćby rowerową w okolice swojej miejscowości, albo kupi bilet na autobus do sąsiedniego miasta, bo zawsze, zawsze i wszędzie można znaleźć coś ciekawego, na każdej szerokości geograficznej 🙂 Trzeba tylko tych miejsc poszukać. I przede wszystkim, trzeba je chcieć znaleźć 😀

Co jednak nie zmienia faktu, że każdy z nas ma jakieś ulubione kropki na mapie świata : do jednych chciałby choć raz w życiu się udać, a do innych już tylko opcjonalnie…

I tu zaczynę kolejny kontrowersyjny wątek : otóż Teneryfa była zawsze dla mnie jedynie – opcjonalna. Nigdy nie byłam wielką fanką niekończących się imprez, zwłaszcza hotelowych, podróżowania wyłącznie w celach rozrywkowych, czy balowania przez tydzień w barze z all inclusive. A z tym właśnie Teneryfa mi się kojarzyła. Do dziś, mam wrażenie, że gdyby nie okoliczności, jakie się zdarzyły na Malcie, raczej bym Teneryfy na mojej liście zaliczonych destynacji jeszcze nie miała…

Tak więc, jak już wspominałam w blogu o Malcie, pewnego deszczowego dnia, zdarzyło mi się otrzymać tam kupon, który okazał się tygodniowym pobytem w kompleksie hotelowym w Los Cristianos, na Teneryfie, największej z wysp Kanaryjskich. A ja co sobie pomyślałam???

A ja sobie pomyślałam : taaaa, jasne! 😀

I tak właściwie myślałam do momentu zameldowania się w recepcji Beverly Hills Heights Tenerife…. Od samego początku byłam do tej wyprawy nastawiona bardzo sceptycznie. Nigdy w życiu nic wcześniej nie wygrałam….🙈 Pewnie dlatego, umówmy się, przygotowanie jej trochę zaniedbałam. Pomijając już moje powątpiewania w realność tego, że nie będę musiała płacić za tygodniowy pobyt dla dwóch osób w jednopokojowym apartamencie, w kompleksie hotelowym, miałam obawy, że moje pieniądze wydane na lot ( przelot musiał być w naszym zakresie), będą nieco zmarnowane, jeśli okaże się na miejscu, że rezerwacji dla nas nie ma…. Sam zaś lot w towarzystwie już ostro zaprawionym w imprezowym klimacie, tylko mnie utwierdzał w przekonaniu, że coś z tym wyjazdem będzie nie tak 😀 🙈😂

Czy zatem było coś nie tak? Hotel i sam apartament okazał się rzeczywiście bardzo wygodny, przyjazny, położony w bardzo dobrym miejscu dla takich wędrowców jak my, gdyż na dystans jakichś piętnastu minut, mieliśmy do dyspozycji zajezdnię z autobusami, udającymi się w różne kierunki wyspy. Bilety autobusowe, wówczas ( grudzień 2017), miały bardzo przystępne ceny, biorąc pod uwagę odległości między niektórymi miejscowościami. Obecne ceny i przejazdy łatwo prześledzić na stronie : titsa.com.

Tak więc nocleg w Beverly Hills Heights, pomimo faktu, iż bardzo rzadko zdarza nam się wybrać opcję hoteli, bardzo nam się podobał, i jest naprawdę godny polecenia. Radzę tylko wziąć pod uwagę, iż obiekt jest położony na sporym pagórku… 🙈

A co do samej wyspy… Teneryfa jest piękna. To jest niezaprzeczalny fakt. Park Narodowy z wulkanem Teide, najwyższym wzniesieniem na Atlantyku ( na który zresztą nie zdołaliśmy się wspiąć, gdyż dziennie może wejść tam tylko 200 osób, trzeba więc bilety kupować ze sporym wyprzedzeniem), jest jedną z największych atrakcji wyspy. Piękne plaże z niecodziennym dla oka widokiem czarnego piasku, malownicze klify Los Gigantos – na Teneryfie bez wątpienia jest na czym oko zawiesić. Dla poszukujących fascynujących widoków, mogę polecić okolice Chinguaro, gdzie widok domów wzniesionych w pobliżu jaskiń jest naprawdę niesamowity. Odważni duchem i ciałem, mogą się zaś udać na przepięknie położoną Playa Diego Hernandez, okoliczną plażę nudystów. Wbrew pozorom nie tylko po to, aby popracować nad opalenizną całego ciała, dosłownie. Żyją tam grupy współczesnych „dzieci kwiatów”, w namiotach, z małymi paleniskami w pobliżu, a nawet z maleńkimi dziećmi. Jest to widok tak niezwykły, że człowiek ma chwilami wrażenie, że znajduje się na innej planecie, gdzie wszyscy żyją w zgodzie z naturą…

Stolica Teneryfy Santa Cruz, jak i Puerto de la Cruz, znajdujące się na północy wyspy również zachęcają pięknymi widokami, jak i innymi atrakcjami, do których należy przede wszystkim Loro Park. ZOO budzące tyleż samo zainteresowania, co kontrowersji… Z mojej strony mogę jedynie powiedzieć, że owszem, jest tam bardzo dużo pokazów z udziałem delfinów, orek, różnego rodzaju ptaków, czy gadów. Kwestię etyki zostawiam Wam do oceny. Jednak muszę przyznać, że zwierzęta tam przebywające są naprawdę bardzo zadbane. Czego nie można powiedzieć o każdym ogrodzie zoologicznym….A tak pięknej części akwarystycznej do tej pory jeszcze nigdzie nie zdarzyło mi się oglądać.

Ale Teneryfa ma swoją drugą stronę. Niestety. Ta strona jest głównie do zaobserwowania na południu wyspy. Okolice Playa de las Americas to teren dosłownie okupowany przez imprezowiczów. Zwłaszcza w sezonie letnim. Tłumy przyjezdnych w restauracjach, klubach nocnych, na plażach, w galeriach handlowych. Los Cristianos niewiele odbiega od takiego schematu. W tej części Teneryfy jedną z głównych atrakcji jest Siam Park. Wodny raj dla dzieci i dorosłych.

Jak zwiedzać wyspę? Tak, jak wspomniałam, można korzystać z autobusów miejskich. Sporo można też zobaczyć podczas pieszych wędrówek, ale należy pamiętać, że Teneryfa jest terenem bardzo górzystym. Wielu podróżników poleca oczywiście wynajęcie auta, gdyż jest to bez wątpienia środek transportu pozwalający na szybsze zwiedzanie wyspy, zwłaszcza jeśli czas nagli. Jeśli natomiast nie do końca jesteście pewni, co, kiedy i gdzie na Teneryfie obejrzeć, możecie przeglądnąć stronę Tenerife 100%life.

Do zdecydowanych plusów Teneryfy, moim zdaniem należy pogoda 🥰. Przemierzaliśmy wyspę w grudniu, wśród wszechobecnych bożonarodzeniowych dekoracji, a jednocześnie wśród palm. Przy ok 28st C. Czego chcieć więcej??? 😀 Tubylcy będą trochę Wam narzekać na Calimę, wiatr znad Sahary… Ale czego się nie robi dla promieni słonecznych 😀 ….. Dlatego każdy, kto raz będzie na tej kanaryjskiej wyspie, już zawsze będzie jej mieszkańcom zazdrościć klimatu, nawet jeśli latem muszą się czuć dosłownie jak na patelni….

Na nieszczęście dla Teneryfy, rok później zdarzyło mi się zobaczyć Lanzarote. O wiele mniejszą, spokojniejszą, powiedziałabym – łagodniejszą w obyciu, również kanaryjską wyspę. Od tego czasu Teneryfa nieuchronnie wróciła na moją listę tak zwanych „tylko opcji”…

Czy to znaczy, że odradzałabym komuś wizytę w Los Cristianos, czy Santa Cruz, czy gdziekolwiek na Teneryfie? Absolutnie nie !!! Wręcz przeciwnie ! 😀 Jeśli tylko macie możliwości i okazję – lećcie. Przekonajcie się sami, bo może dla Was właśnie , ta wyspa stanie się ulubionym wakacyjnym miejscem 😀

TWO FACES OF ATHENS

In my workplace, where I earn money to afford a bread (or rather to afford the buckwheat for my bread) and flight tickets , I am perceived as a person, let’s say : unusual 😀 Not only because of my highly sarcastic sense of humour, specific nutritional-health-social views, and a passion for the subject of serial killers and other psychopaths. The general interest is mainly the fact, that I am constantly flying somewhere, and the calendar of trips I have planned for longer, than a year in advance. That’s on paper. Because in my mind I probably have a schedule for the next 10 years 😀 .

Naturally, such long-range plans undergo modifications, changes, sometimes, but rarely cancelled. However, this does not change the fact, that by organising our trips on my own, I always try to prepare everything thoroughly. Understanding the area in which we intend to stay, any transport that can be used, places that must be seen, etc. These are only the basic points of such preparations … Believe me – there is much more … 😀 Travelling, „our way” is sometimes hard work 🙂 Really … Just looking for flight tickets, accommodation, matching holiday dates is sometimes a real feat … 😀

That is why, being aware of how much energy was devoted to the initial organization of a given trip, while on the spot it turns out that we need to change the whole plan for this moment, you always have to be prepared for the irritating circumstances ….

That’s what we experienced during our last trip – to Athens. One of the oldest European capitals, which is also the largest city in Greece, home of olives, Olympic games and democracy … A place, that every historical enthusiast simply must see. A place, that has as much magic in it, as painfully stub in the eyes images of the modern face of the country … A place, that can arouse admiration, while shocking.

But.. Let’s get to the point …

Looking for accommodation in a convenient place, I chose the Isminis area, located between the Port of Piraeus and the Acropolis, in the northern part of Athens. A very comfortable, neat little one-room flat was waiting for us there. Definitely recommendable, booked on Booking.com. And here … and here the stairs begin … Because the list of usually recommended by me hosts, or other organisers of expeditions, etc., in Athens, on the order of accommodation, unfortunately, ends … Without going too much into the basically irrelevant details, I will only mention, that for the first time in my life I had to leave a negative feedback somewhere on the Internet … To be precise, I would only add, that having a few organised trips, that looked really interesting, I was put in a situation where at the very last moment I had to be guide for myself … 🤣🙈 And for caution, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that, in principle, only one company deals with such an organisation there, so if you have already decided to buy some „attraction” then, really check all details thoroughly …

Anyway, enough of complains 😀

As an experienced, a little bit at least, traveller, I had to get to work, and embrace exploring everything on my own. It is not so complicated in Athens, but the whole thing often depends on where you are. Public transport in Athens consists of: three metro lines, and a network of buses and trolleybuses. Information on these can be found on the Civitatis Athens website.

Of course, we focused on our own transport – a pair of legs. Even today, I have the impression that we have walked in Athens countless kilometres, traversing the city that never ceased to amaze us … On the one hand, absolutely amazing, beautiful, incredibly proud historic part of the Greek capital, fighting bravely with the present image of ancient Hellas … And today’s face? … Well … Even if someone is not very interested in politics or the world economy, after travelling a few kilometres the capital of Greece, is able to see that bankruptcy, not the first of this country, is visible literally at every step …. And this fact is just as much a kind of sadness as it provokes reflection: why? ….. I can already hear comments in the background, reminding me that similar, for example, abandoned „zombie estates” occur in Spain or Portugal, and Cyprus is not much different from such images .. It is true. However, this is the centre of Athens, not the suburban of the capital …

Fortunately, Athens heroically defends its cultural heritage, which dates back to the second millennium BC. Being there, you just can’t miss such works as the Acropolis (20 euros admission ticket), Erechtejon, Odeon of Herodos, Hadrian’s Arch, Dionysus Theater, or the Tower of Winds or the Temple of Olympian Zeus (6 euros admission). All these monuments, despite the quite tectonically unstable terrain, exposed to earthquakes from time to time, still bravely reign over the sad face of modern Athens.

However, if someone would like to see and trace the history of these places, gathered together, I recommend a visit to the Acropolis Museum (10 euros). Entrance tickets are best bought comprehensively, for a few days, in several places (cost of 30 euros). But of course individual versions are also available.

It should also be remembered that Athens is not only great architecture, the world of Greek myths, or the Olympic Games. It also has beautiful beaches, Mediterranean, Ionian and Aegean seas surroundings, beautiful parks, and botanical gardens. Did the crisis also creep into those picturesque areas? Unfortunately yes. However, when it comes to the beauty of nature, it always wins with all kinds of inconveniences of everyday life.

To the specific part of the Greek’s flora and fauna certainly belong countless cats everywhere 😀 No one ever chases them away, you can see them literally everywhere 🤣🙈 To the extent that I would probably not be surprised to see them, for example in the toilet … Whether home or public one 😀 Greeks just love cats. More than just cats in Athens, there is probably only olive trees ….

Athens also has other somehowt forgotten monuments. These include the Averof ship – a Greek armoured cruiser, which also hides the interesting parts of European history. Admission costs only 4 euros, and the visit there is really worth that amount :). Next to it you can find also an ancient Greek trier, from the 5th century BC – Olympias trier.

The weather in Athens, like in most of the whole country, is also very encouraging. Mild winters, very warm summers, lots of sun and opportunities to catch the olive skin colour 🙂

But there are also astonishing things in the Greek capital. And apart from the shadow of the economic crisis, which, however, covers usually sunny part of this piece of the world, in some cases I have literally strained my mind in order to find the answer to the key question: „what did the poet mean?” 🤔

Well, architectural pearls, in the form of extremely interestingly designed sidewalks or pedestrian crossings, parking vehicles, traffic lights, make up sometimes extremely puzzling image of everyday life in Athens, or I suspect – in Greece in general.

While visiting Athens you certainly will take notice of shops with beautiful Greek handicrafts and Greek delicacies. Shopping in them is not the cheapest, but believe me, better olives, spices for tzatziki or feta cheese, you will not find anywhere 😀

At the end obviously, I have to mention something about Greek cuisine. But only mention for now. Literally. Greek cuisine is delicious 😀 And that’s it. I expand the topic in a separate blog, it will soon be included in the section : „world’s kitchen”. In my opinion, Greek cuisine is worth separate chapter 🙂

Our stay in Athens lasted a week and aroused very mixed feelings in me … Like no other trip so far. Not only because my plans had to be modified in the blink of an eye, but also because of the so-called entirety. I am, of course, aware of the fact that Athens is just a piece of Greece, a scrap of the whole beautiful country. And I think, I want to give this country a second chance, probably going to one of its islands after some time.

As for Athens, however, today I know that the city definitely able to enchant with the ancient legacy, the beauty of nature and fascinating history. At the same time, somewhere deep in the mind, it raise the fear, that these treasures might be lost somewhere, that their days are numbered. I deeply hope, that such impressions will remain in just a sphere of fear only as long as possible.

DWA OBLICZA ATEN

W moim miejscu pracy, gdzie na co dzień zarabiam na chleb ( a raczej na kaszę do mojego chleba ) i na bilety lotnicze, jestem postrzegana jako osoba, powiedzmy : nietypowa 😀 Nie tylko ze względu na moje niewysublimowane i dalece sarkastyczne poczucie humoru, specyficzne poglądy żywieniowo-zdrowotno-społeczne, oraz zamiłowanie do tematyki z zakresu seryjnych morderców i innych psychopatów. Ogólne zainteresowanie budzi przede wszystkim fakt, że ciągle latam gdzieś na urlop, a sam kalendarz wyjazdów mam zaplanowany czasem na dłużej, niż rok z wyprzedzeniem. To na papierze. Bo w umyśle mam prawdopodobnie grafik na jakieś najbliższe 10 lat 😀

Naturalnie zdarza się, iż tak dalekosiężne plany ulegają modyfikacjom, zmianom, bardzo rzadko zostają odwołane. Co jednak nie zmienia faktu, że organizując samodzielnie nasze wyjazdy, zawsze staram się wszystko rzetelnie przygotować. Rozeznanie okolicy, w której mamy zamiar się zatrzymać, ewentualny transport, z jakiego można skorzystać, miejsca , które należy koniecznie zobaczyć, itp. To tylko podstawowe punkty takich przygotowań… Uwierzcie mi – jest tego znacznie więcej… 😀 Podróżowanie, „naszym sposobem”, to czasem ciężka praca 🙂 Naprawdę… Już samo szukanie biletów lotniczych, noclegów, zgranie terminów urlopów, jest czasem nie lada wyczynem… 😀

Dlatego właśnie, mając świadomość, ile energii się poświęciło na wstępną organizację danego wyjazdu, podczas gdy na miejscu okazuje się, że musimy cały plan na ten tychmiast zmieniać, trzeba się też czasem przygotować na irytujące okoliczności przyrody….

O tym właśnie przekonałam się podczas naszej ostatniej wyprawy – do Aten. Jednej z najstarszych stolic europejskich, będącej jednocześnie największym miastem Grecji, ojczyzny oliwek, igrzysk i demokracji… Miejsce, które każdy historyczny pasjonat po prostu musi zobaczyć. Miejsce, które ma w sobie tyle samo magii, co kłujących boleśnie oczy obrazów współczesnego oblicza kraju… Miejsce, potrafiące wzbudzić podziw, jednocześnie szokując.

Przejdźmy jednak do rzeczy…

Poszukując noclegu w dogodnym miejscu, wybrałam dzielnicę Isminis, znajdującą się mniej więcej pomiędzy Portem w Pireusie a Akropolem, w północnej części Aten. Czekało tam na nas bardzo wygodne, zadbane małe, jednopokojowe mieszkanko. Zdecydowanie godne polecenia, zabukowane na Booking.com. I tu… i tu zaczynają się schody… Ponieważ lista polecanych przeze mnie zwykle gospodarzy, czy innego rodzaju organizatorów wypraw itp, w Atenach, na poleceniu noclegu się niestety kończy… Nie wnikając za bardzo w nieistotne w zasadzie szczegóły, wspomnę jedynie, iż pierwszy raz w życiu zdarzyło mi się zostawić gdzieś w internecie złą opinię… Gwoli ścisłości, dodam jednynie, że mając zaplanowane kilka wycieczek zorganizowanych, które naprawdę wyglądały ciekawie, zostałam postawiona w sytuacji, kiedy w ostatniej chwili musiałam sobie sama być przewodnikiem… 🤣🙈 A dla przestrogi, chciałabym zwrócić Waszą uwagę na fakt, że w zasadzie tylko jedna firma zajmuje się tam taką organizacją, także jeśli już zdecydowaliście się na zakup jakiejś „atrakcji” to naprawdę sprawdźcie rzetelnie wszelkie szczegóły…

Ale dosyć narzekań 😀

Jako doświadczony, w miarę przynajmniej, i zaprawiony w boju podróżnik, musiałam się wziąć zatem do roboty, i ogarnąć zwiedzanie wszystkiego na własną rękę. Nie jest to w Atenach aż tak bardzo skomplikowane, ale całość zależy bardzo często od miejsca, gdzie przebywacie. Na transport publiczny w Atenach składają się : trzy linie metra, oraz sieć autobusów i trolejbusów. Informacje na temat tych środków komunikacji można znaleźć na stronie Civitatis Athens.

My oczywiście postawiliśmy na nasz własny transport – czyli parę nóg. Jeszcze dziś mam wrażenie, że przeszliśmy w Atenach jakieś niezliczone ilości kilometrów, przemierzając miasto, które nie przestawało nas zadziwiać… Z jednej strony absolutnie niesamowita, przepiękna, niebywale dumna część zabytkowa greckiej stolicy, na każdym kroku walcząca dzielnie z dzisiejszym wizerunkiem dawnej Hellady… A dzisiejsze oblicze?… No cóż… Nawet jeśli ktoś niebardzo interesuje się polityką, czy gospodarką światową, po przejściu kilku kilometrów stolicą Grecji, jest w stanie zauważyć, że bankructwo, nie pierwsze zresztą, tego kraju, jest widoczne dosłownie na każdym kroku…. I jest to fakt tyleż samo budzący swego rodzaju smutek, co nakłaniający do refleksji : dlaczego?….. Już słyszę w tle komentarze, zwracające mi uwagę, że podobne na przykład „osiedla widma” występują w Hiszpanii, czy Portugalii, a Cypr również niewiele się różni od takowych obrazów.. To prawda. Jednak to jest proszę Państwa centrum Aten, nie obrzeża stolicy…

Na całe szczęście Ateny heroicznie bronią się swoim kulturalnym dorobkiem, którego początki sięgają drugiego tysiąclecia p.n.e. Będąc tam, po prostu nie można ominąć takich dzieł jak : Akropol ( bilet wstępu 20 euro), Erechtejon, Odeon Herodosa, Łuk Hadriana, Teatr Dionizosa, czy Wieża Wiatrów lub Świątynia Zeusa Olimpijskiego (wstęp 6 euro). Wszystkie te zabytki, pomimo dosyć niestabilnego tektonicznie terenu, narażonego na trzęsienia ziemi od czasu do czasu, nadal dzielnie królują nad smutnym obliczem współczesnych Aten.

Jeśli ktoś natomiast chciałby zobaczyć i prześledzić dzieje tych miejsc, zebrane w jedną całość, polecam wizytę w Muzeum Akropolu ( 10 euro). Bilety wstępu najlepiej kupić komplekosowo, na kilka dni, w kilka miejsc ( koszt 30 euro). Ale oczywiście wersje indywidualne też są dostępne.

Trzeba również pamiętać, że Ateny to nie tylko wspaniała architektura, świat mitów greckich, czy igrzyska olimpijskie. To także piękne plaże, otoczenie Morza Śródziemnego, Jońskiego i Egejskiego, piękne parki, ogrody botaniczne. Czy w tamte malownicze rejony również wkradł się kryzys? Niestety tak. Jednak jeśli chodzi o piękno natury, ono zawsze wygrywa ze wszelkiego rodzaju niedogodnościami życia codziennego.

Do specyficznej części greckiej flory i fauny, z pewnością należy niezliczona liczba, wszędzie obecnych kotów 😀 Nikt nigdy ich nie przegania, zobaczyć je można dosłownie wszędzie 🤣🙈 Do tego stopnia, że prawdopodobnie nie zdziwiłby mnie ich widok na przykład w toalecie… Obojętnie czy domowej, czy publicznej 😀 Grecy po prostu kochają koty. Więcej niż kotów w Atenach, jest chyba tylko drzew oliwnych….

Ateny mają też inne, nieco zapomniane zabytki. Należy do nich statek Averof – grecki krążownik pancerny, kryjący w sobie również ciekawe dzieje europejskiej historii. Wstęp kosztuje jednynie 4 euro, a wizyta tam jest naprawdę warta takiej kwoty :). Obok niego znajduje się też starogrecka triera, pochodzący z V wieku pne, statek z rodzaju tzw. : galer.

Pogoda w Atenach, podobnie jak w większości kraju, również jest bardzo zachęcająca. Łagodne zimy, bardzo ciepłe lata, dużo słońca i okazji do złapania oliwkowego koloru skóry 🙂

Ale są i w greckiej stolicy rzeczy zadzwiające. I pomijając już cień kryzysu gospodarczego, jaki pokrywa ogólnie jednak słoneczną część tej części świata, to w niektórych przypadkach zdarzało mi się dosłownie nadwyrężać mój umysł, w celu znalezienia odpowiedzi na kluczowe pytanie : ” co poeta miał na myśli?” 🤔

Otóż perełki architektoniczne w postaci niezwykle ciekawie zaprojektowanych chodników, czy też przejść dla pieszych, parkowanie pojazdów, sygnalizacja świetlna , składają się na niebywale zastanawiający czasem obraz życia codziennego w Atenach, czy podejrzewam – w Grecji w ogóle.

Uwagę też z pewnością przyciągają sklepy z pięknym, greckim rękodziełem, oraz z greckimi smakołykami. Zakupy w nich nie należą do najtańszych, ale proszę mi wierzyć, oliwek, przypraw do tzatziki czy sera feta, nigdzie nie znajdziecie lepszych 😀

Na koniec muszę naturalnie wspomnieć od greckiej kuchni. Ale tylko wspomnieć. Dosłownie. Kuchnia grecka jest pyszna 😀 I tyle 😀 Temat bowiem postanowiłam rozwinąć w osobnym wpisie, i zamieścić niebawem w dziale : „kuchnie świata”. Kuchnia grecka moim zdaniem, jest tego jak najbardziej warta 😀

Nasz pobyt w Atenach trwał tydzień i wzbudził we mnie bardzo mieszane uczucia… Jak chyba jeszcze żaden wyjazd do tej pory. Nie tylko ze względu na fakt, iż moje plany musiały w oka mgnieniu zostać zmodyfikowane, ale również ze względu na , tak zwany, całokształt. Zdaję sobie oczywiście sprawę z faktu, że Ateny to tylko fragment Grecji, skrawek całości pięknego państwa. I tak sobie myślę, że chcę dać temu krajowi drugą szansę, prawdopodobnie wybierając się za jakiś czas na jedną z jego wysp.

Co do Aten jednak, dziś już wiem, że zdecydowanie są w stanie oczarować starożytną spuścizną, pięknem natury i fascynującą historią. Jednocześnie , gdzieś w głębi umysłu, wzbudzają obawę, że te skarby mogą się gdzieś zapodziać , że ich dni są policzone. Mam głęboką nadzieję, że takie wrażenia pozostaną w sferze obaw tylko, jak najdłużej.

MALAGA BY WALK

Leaving Krakow a dozen years ago, I did not think, that for many years Poland would be my holiday „abroad destination” … For almost half of this period, it was my one and only holiday direction : London —> Krakow. This was due to many different circumstances, more or less important. But the temperament and personality of the „soul on suitcases” ultimately beat all inconveniences.

So… the time has come, and finally I told my other half : we’re going to Spain!

At that time I had no idea, that this country would gain such a special place in my heart together with Krakow and Austrian Baden … Up to even that point, that I started to learn Spanish at my age (!) … 😀

The very first region we visited in picturesque Spain was Andalusia, more specifically Malaga. Yes, you guessed it well, it’s Costa del Sol. Currently one of the most popular regions of the Iberian Peninsula. It is crowded and hot in summer. However, our rule is travelling, if possible, of course, outside the so-called season. Not only for financial reasons. First of all, just to avoid the holiday crowds.

Malaga is a city slightly larger in area than Kraków, my home city, with an equally long history, which is very easy to get around. It is the capital of the province of the same name. Well-marked city buses (ticket available from the driver), two metro lines, and suburban trains, all at very affordable prices, give tourists the opportunity to explore the area on their own, without any problems. But for experienced walkers, exploring the city on foot should not be difficult :p

Was that the plan? Not really…. But.. after years of not travelling, man gets out of practice … Not to mention the fact, that since my last actual trip, everything has changed about travel … There were tons of new websites, Facebook and other Instagrams … I had to learn all of this again … And the beginnings were not easy … Hence the quality of photos or sightseeing – the older, the more „unusual” clumsy, and completely different to our current trips.

Since Malaga trip, my way of organising journeys went through a kind of evolution. However, this does not mean, that our first stay in Spain was a waste of time. Quiet the opposite, it was then, when not only the love for Latin climate has increased, but above all, the very idea of returning to travel the world began to take shape again 😀

We spent a week in Malaga, in a cosy motel run by a very nice family. We even got the option with breakfasts (which in our case is not so obvious 😉 ) … I must point out here that Marcin, my other half, was quite sceptical at the beginning about these breakfasts, especially when he saw fruit on the plate, plus maybe two toasts with a few slices of chorizo. In the sense that the amount, of course 😀 😀 However, it soon turned out, that in this climate, it is a completely enough amount of food …

I will not re-write the history of Malaga from Wikipedia or other online sources, because whoever is willing to do it, will do it anyway, and who just wants to know what is going on at the Costa del Sol , you can just follow, for example, groups on Facebook about tourism in this area, which I heartily recommend, because they are really helpful. From my experience , I can say that with the history of Malaga, it’s a bit like with my travel history : up and down 😀 . And a bit from one extreme to the other … Because of its strategic location, Malaga has always attracted great rulers. Rulers very culturally different. That is why the architecture of this Spanish city has a combination of Roman, Islamic and modern features.

From the ruins of Teatro Romano, through La Alcazaba, Castillo de Gibralfaro, to the Cervantes Theater, everything has a special atmosphere. Definitely worth seeing each of these buildings.

For lovers of corrida I recommend Plaza de Toros de la Malagueta. Corrida, which is already banned in many places in Spain. In Andalusia, however, unfortunately fights with bulls are still taking place. Yes, I know, it’s a tradition. And although I try to maintain objectivity and respect for local rites in all my stories, it is not possible in all cases …

Of course, followers of bullfighting may point another controversial example of local traditions, as are frequent Catholic processions, in which people dressed up as characters looks almost like from the ku klux klan … Well, that’s the way how it is with traditions, you love them, or you don’t understand them…

And when you explore kilometres around Malaga by walk, you can get on a train, and take the , for example, to see Benalmadena 🙂 A beautiful, picturesque town, where despite all the current tourist fever, the residents managed to maintain such a typical suburban and romantic atmosphere. If you’re not afraid of heights, you can even take a ride on the Benalmadena Cable Car. There is also a charming Park and beautiful beaches …

Generally, the land of Banderas and Picasso has this „something”, that has made us, since then, at least once a year go to Spain. To visit different regions, at different latitudes … But it all began there, I managed to actually liked olives,it is there, where Spanish mentality has amazed me , it is there, where I could see, that, something like siesta really exists, and there I decided to see more in my life. Decided to see as much as I only can 🙂 . And that’s what I stick to ever since 😀

Many places we didn’t see during that trip to Málaga, perhaps because of our inadvertence, deficiencies in a well-thought-out organisation, and perhaps because of time limits. However, we all know : the beginnings can be difficult 😉

It is definitely worth going to El Camito del Rey, a walking path among the gorge located in the National Park Desfiladero de los Gaitanes, which we unfortunately did not visit, but it is certainly on our „additional list” 😉 . While in Malaga, you can also arrange a trip to Gibraltar. For those, who are always on the run, just like us, I can recommend, as usual, the HopOnHopOff bus.

So, whatever was left in my memory, I shared it with you now 🙂 . While flying to Malaga, my intention was primarily to take advantage of the sunny weather, which is so rare in London sometimes … But I came back with a luggage full of plans for next trips for the minimum next ten years 😀 . Plans, that sometimes changes, evolve, but most of all : they are there 😀 .

Costa del Sol is a place full of cultural and historical attractions, where you can enjoy the sun for most of the year, even with recent floods. Climate conditions, flamenco rhythms, picturesque small Andalusian streets create a truly unique atmosphere, that I hope, will last in this beautiful region for as long as possible 🙂
